Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

We haven't seen the latest "Pirates" installment, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES. But if there's one thing we know about the series, it's that Capt. Jack Sparrow loves him some rum. The most appropriate rum concoction for pirates, the Zombie, is a powerful and deceptive libation, as the smooth, fruity taste masks its potency. You can even light it on fire! Other popular rum potables include the Daiquirí, MOJITO, and the Cuba Libre, more commonly known as the Rum and Coke. Recipes for all four are listed below!

Jack running low on supplies.

  • 1 ounce light rum
  • 1 ounce golden rum
  • 1 ounce dark rum
  • 1 ounce apricot brandy
  • 1 ounce pineapple juice
  • 1 ounce papaya juice
  • ½ ounce 151-proof rum
  • 1 teaspoon grenadine
Throw all of the ingredients except the 151-proof rum into a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake vigorously. Strain into a specialized glass, preferably in the shape of a zombie or tiki girl. Top with the 151-proof rum. Light for presentation (blow out before consuming).

(IBA category: Before-dinner cocktail - dry or medium)
  • 1½ ounces light rum
  • 1 ounce lime juice
  • 1 teaspoon gomme syrup
Throw all of the ingredients into a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake vigorously. Strain into a cocktail glass, preferably chilled.

  • 4 fresh mint sprigs
  • 1 tablespoon sugar

Throw the mint, sugar, and lime juice into a collins glass. Gently crush the mint and sugar (only bruise the mint, do not shred), and let sit for a minute. Add the rum, then stir. Then add some ice and top off with soda water. Garnish with mint, if you have any to spare, and the lime wedge.

    Cuba Libre ("rum and Coke")
  • 2 ounces light rum
  • 4 ounces cola
  • 1 lime wedge
Fill a highball glass with ice. Throw in the cola and rum. Garnish with the lime wedge.
